"Nocturn, Germany, 2001

Nocturn was formed 1994 in Hamburg, Germany. They started out as cover band playing the local clubs featuring Southern Rock material by bands like Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Molly Hatchet and 38 Special. Nocturn still hails these bands as their core influences now that they have put together their first full-length CD of original material.

The band consists of Alfie Mizrahi (lead vocals), Kay-Hendryk Speer (lead & rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Lutz Melzer (bass & backing vocals), Arne Bihn (keyboards) and Johann Kloevekorn (drums). Mizrahi certainly has a voice that's whisky-drenched enough to sound like an authentic southern rocker. Speer's guitar work is modelled after the classic 70s vintage sound of their heroes. The rhythm section rocks a steady beat and the keyboard sound adds that extra southern spice, be it honky tonk piano, a smoking Hammond organ or a classy Rhodes piano sound.

The production is a bit rough and if they get enough interest from record companies I hope they can get help to show their potential a bit better. I think they show here that they can write the tunes worthy of being recorded properly and then able to claim a better position in this genre that is thriving since there are quite a few modern day cowboys and bikers out there today that loves their Southern Rock.

I am now convinced that there are cowboys in Germany as well, and I am sure Nocturn would be ideal supplying the soundtrack to a great night out at some shady and smoky club. Now pass me that beer and a whiskey! ;)
